Chemistry Creates a New Way to View the World

by Diane Jones
September 09, 2009

A new group of courageous students prepare to the enter the world of atoms, molecules, bonding and reactions this fall.  They will prepare for the task of contemplating the world at the atomic level by first understanding measurement, precision, accuracy, significant digits and dimensional analysis.  Once they have mastered these basic skills, they will embark upon the development of the atomic model, through a historical perspective, and then on to a dissection of this model by studying the nucleus and the electron probability cloud.

From there they will look forward to acquiring skills which will allow them to recognize and understand bond formation and different types of chemical reactions.  This will enable them to be able to predict product formation, the geometry of various molecular structure types and properties of different compounds.
